Four people were arrested in connection with a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint held in Long Beach over the weekend, according to Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officials.
LBPD’s Traffic Section conducted the checkpoint in the city’s Alamitos Beach neighborhood on Saturday, November 21 at Ocean Boulevard and Cherry Avenue, authorities stated.
Between 7:00PM and 3:00AM, police netted the following results:
- Three DUI-alcohol arrests
- One traffic warrant arrest
- Six field sobriety tests performed
- 12 drivers cited/arrested for operating a vehicle unlicensed or with suspended/revoked license
- 10 citations issued for unsafe driving
“DUI/driver’s license checkpoints have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries,” an LBPD release stated. “A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired, bringing about more awareness, and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.”
In a release, the LBPD recommended people remember that drunk driving is preventable, with proper planning, and encouraged the use the California Office of Traffic Safety Designated Driver VIP (DDVIP) mobile app, which is now available for mobile download. Through the app, which launched last year, users will be able to locate establishments that offer incentives for participating in the app, which helps users order a sober ride from Uber, Lyft or Curb, all on one screen.
Funding for this DUI operation is provided to the Long Beach Police Department by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, reminding everyone to ‘Report Drunk Driver – Call 9-1-1.’
