With the temperature steady at 90 degrees Thursday afternoon, a fourth vault fire in just two months shut down power to over 2,700 Long Beach residents at 2:43PM, according to Southern California Edison’s power outage map and SCE spokesman David Song.

A tweet sent by the City of Long Beach around 3:30PM also confirmed the power outage.

The city’s tweet outlined the area effected by the underground vault fire on the 300 block of West Pacific Coast Highway, extending from Long Beach Boulevard to Magnolia and Hill Street to 16th Street. According to the Southern California Edison map, 2,739 customers were without power as of 3:15PM.

A Long Beach Public Works tweet sent at 3:40PM stated the number of residents affected by the power outage had decreased to approximately 900 customers, and SCE crews were on the scene working to fix the problem.

An SCE tweet confirmed power had been restored to some 1,800 customers around 3:40PM.

According to Long Beach Public Works, power was restored to all affected customers as of 3:55PM.

“Obviously we don’t know what caused it,” said Song, confirming that power had been restored to all residents. “It’s not the same circuit as downtown. We have to trouble shoot, and will continue to work on making sure power is restored to everyone.”

He said there was “no real connection” to what happened in July, referring to the two large-scale power outages that plunged thousands of residents into darkness.

“These are all isolated incidents, especially because they are on different circuits,” Song said, adding that it wasn’t unusual for such incidents to occur during heat waves.
