Hey Buster

Buster Martin is an unlikely candidate to set a marathon record. He drinks beer, smokes cigarettes and stays out late. And he’s 101.

But Martin expects to shatter, or at least ease past, the record next month when he runs London’s marathon. And he is counting on having a beer at the finish line.

Age is no more an obstacle to Martin’s running than that strip of winners tape at the finish line. “You are never too old to do what you enjoy.”
And Martin likes running, “but not as much as I like my beer,” he added.
He is already a man of many firsts. Martin holds three world title records for the oldest person to run the 5K, 10K and the half marathon.

The Rolling Exhibition

When Kevin Connolly was ten years old his family took him to Disney World, but for some theme park visitors that day, it was Connolly who quickly became the main attraction.

Born without legs, Connolly was already used to the stares of strangers — but that moment would help him start to understand that the lens could work in both directions.

On a solo trip to Europe, more than a decade later, he was riding his skateboard down a Vienna street when he felt a man staring at him.

Connolly lifted his camera to his hip, pointed it toward the man and without even looking through the viewfinder, clicked off five or six shots.
Connolly would repeat that action 32,000 more times during his travels, creating a diverse portfolio of individuals from a broad assortment of countries. He posted some of these images online, under the title “The Rolling Exhibition.”

In pictures: Conflict in Tibet

Protests by Buddhist monks in Lhasa, capital of Tibet, against Chinese rule last week worsened into the most serious social unrest to hit the Himalayan territory, which China administers as an “autonomous region”, in nearly two decades.

After sealing the city with a large military and armed police presence, Chinese authorities claim that situations have stabilized. The official death toll was 16, although Tibetan groups said scores and possibly hundreds of Tibetans had been killed.

“Opportunity City”

In an era when many other cities try to position themselves with trendier distinctions (as “smart growth” exemplars or as magnets for high-income households, for instance), Mayor Bill White, a Democrat, is happy for Houston to be known simply as an “opportunity city,” which is a pretty good description of what the place has been since its inception: a venue where people who work hard can get ahead.
