Wireless Medicine

The Bluetooth wireless technology that allows people to use a hands-free earpiece while making a mobile telephone call could soon alert the emergency services when someone has a heart attack, Ofcom predicts.
The communications regulator said that sensors could be implanted into people at risk of heart attack or diabetic collapse that would allow doctors to monitor them remotely.

The technology, which is being tested now in Portsmouth, could also be used if a patient failed to take his or her medicines. A pill dispenser would send an automatic reminder and, if the pills were not taken within a certain time, an alarm would sound and a message would be sent to the patient’s family or caregivers.

We Need Girlfriends

On the HBO series “Entourage,” a young Hollywood movie star and his posse wield the power of celebrity like a cartoon caveman’s club, swinging hard, but with little finesse in their often successful efforts at casual hook ups with beautiful women.

It’s a different story entirely on the hit Web show “We Need Girlfriends,” in which Henry, Tom and Rod, three endearing oddballs from Queens recently dumped by their girlfriends, try to duck and weave their way back into the safety of long-term relationships.

In “Girlfriends,” these three are players only when there’s a board game, like Jenga or Taboo, around. Henry is so shy he literally ducks at the sight of a beautiful woman.

His preferred pickup method is to hang around one long enough until she makes the first move. Rod, on the other hand, won’t talk to females at all, preferring to woo them with sound effects. Only Tom has the courage to ask one out, but his approach could use some work.

Obamamania

Rep. Robert A. Brady (D-Pa.) was driving toward Washington on Thursday morning when he got a call from Barack Obama. Brady asked Obama where he was, and the man fast approaching ‘presumptive nominee’ status told him he was in the Senate.

Brady had an idea: Obama should pop on over to the House chamber and say hello. And that’s just what the Illinois senator did.

When he walked onto the floor, said Brady, Obama made straight for the Pennsylvania corner. “See, Bob,” he said. “I listen to you sometimes.”

“You got to listen to me all the time,” Brady, an uncommitted superdelegate, said as he joked in response.
