Councilmember Suja Lowenthal has a trio of green initiatives on tonight’s City Council agenda that would direct the City Manager’s office progress even further on Long Beach’s commitment to “going green”.
The first would commit the City Council to supporting the County of Los Angeles’ efforts to evaluate and promote development of next generation conversion technologies that minimize landfill disposal, create ‘green collar’ jobs, and utilize waste material in an environmentally beneficial manner.
With support of the County’s efforts comes a mandate for the City Manager to seek partnerships with the county, and for our City’s lobbying professionals to promote legislation that “greens” waste management.
The second agenda item is a partner of sorts, requesting the City Manager to “determine whether Long Beach would benefit from the creation of a green waste program located in City boundaries”.
The third “green” agenda item requests the City Council to “concur in the recommendation of the Tidelands and Harbor Committee to request a study session to discuss the Port of Long Beach’s Clean Trucks Program and Concession Agreement.”
The Clean Trucks Program seeks to modernize trucking fleets and improve air quality.
The Long Beach City Council meeting starts at 5pm at City Hall.
