10:15am | The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine and City Councilmember Gary DeLong invite the community to a groundbreaking ceremony for the first phase of the Alamitos Bay Marina Rebuild Project on Saturday, September 17 at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will take place at 5875 Appian Way, in the parking lot near the Long Beach Yacht Club.
“These are much-needed renovations that will extend the useful life of the Marina and improve the level of safety for boaters,” Mayor Bob Foster said.
The Alamitos Bay Marina was built in the 1950s and 1960s. Its wooden dock and gangway facilities, parking lots, and the restroom buildings have deteriorated and are in need of significant renovation. Concrete docks will replace the deteriorated wooden docks, which will extend their lifespan and lower maintenance costs, while maintaining the Marina’s unique character.
“Boaters, local residents and tourists can all take advantage of these improvements, which truly are an investment in our community and our economy,” said Councilmember DeLong, who represents the 3rd District.
Additional Improvements will include:
- Repaving parking areas, repairing seawalls, upgrading utilities and renovating 13 restroom buildings
- Dredging silt from basins to ensure safe navigation and adequate access for the boating public
- Satisfying Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for access to Marina facilities and docks
- Upgrading utility facilities
- Providing longer average slip lengths to accommodate larger boats.
The Marina currently serves 1,450 customers in Basins 1 through 7. The rehabilitation will create 1,646 improved slips, as well as mitigate any eelgrass vegetation loss by adding a total of 500 additional square feet of eelgrass, which provides a protected environment for fish.
Phase 1 is expected to cost approximately $23.7 million and take six to seven months to complete. Slip fees will be used to repay a loan from the Department of Boating and Waterways that is providing financing for the project.
