11:45 am| The man who broke into a residence in Signal Hill Sunday night and climbed into bed with a sleeping 10-year-old girl pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts in Long Beach Superior Court.
According to the Associated Press, the girl’s father heard strange noises coming from her bedroom at about 2:20 a.m. Monday. When he entered his daughter’s room at their residence in the 1900 block of Cherry Avenue to check on her, he discovered a drunken intruder stripped down to his boxer shorts in the 10-year-old’s bed as she slept.
The father reportedly wrenched the man out of the bed and held him as his son went for help. The father and a neighbor reportedly held the intruder until police arrived.
Signal Hill Police Department spokeswoman Crista Martinez told the AP that 24-year-old Sergio Osuna, of Whittier, was taken into custody. KTLA Channel 5 News reported that he was booked on one count each of felony burglary and felony child annoyance, but the District Attorney’s Office reduced the charges to misdemeanors.
Osuna reportedly told police he had been wandering around the family’s apartment complex looking for a place to sleep. He gained access to the apartment by pulling the screen off of an open window, reaching in and unlocking the front door.
The girl was unaware that someone was in her bed.
In his mugshot, Osuna features a number of bruises to his face. The bruises are the result of the girl’s father kicking him repeatedly, according to KTLA.
The family has only lived in the apartment for six months. Despite an alarm system being installed since the incident, the family is reportedly currently searching for a new place to live.
