8:15am | The fun and excitement of Independence Day won’t be limited to the fireworks show tonight, as there is plenty of summer fun to be had on the ground as well!
This morning, the Community Action Team (CAT) will hold its annual two-mile Bike Parade down 2nd Street. More than 350 kids are expected to join the cycling procession, and anyone can register to join at 9:15am that morning.
After the local Boy Scout Honor Guard presents the colors and Miss Wheelchair Californoa sings the National Anthem, the parade will begin at 10:00am at 1 Granada Avenue and roll on down the Belmont Shore strip for about thirty minutes. Want to enter the patriotic speech contest? You get a free t-shirt? Want to dress up like a famous patriotic character? You get a free t-shirt! (Dibs on Hancock)
You can also buy a $1 ticket for a chance to win a limited edition beach cruiser from Jones Bicycles to recognize their 100th anniversary, and forty local students who do not have the means to buy a bike will be presented with their very own rides. To find out how to get involved or learn more information, visit BikeParade.com.
You can also spend your July 4th with a pool party at the Aquarium of the Pacific! What’s better than a pool party? No, you can’t get in the pool. There are sharks and stuff in there. But you can get discounted admission and a buffet BBQ dinner.
After 5:00pm, tickets to the aquarium are just $11.95 per person. The buffet BBQ takes place on the aquarium lawn from 6:00-8:00pm, serving bourbon-glazed barbeque chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs, roasted corn on the cob and much more — sorry, no sushi. A buffet ticket (includes admission) runs $34 per adult and $27 per child. You’ll also get a spectacular view of the Queen Mary fireworks from your grassy seat. Call 562.590.3100 or visit AquariumOfPacific.org for more information.
