Hundreds of people are expected to participate in the 2015 ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk in Long Beach this June, marking the fourth year the event has been held in the Los Angeles region.

The event will include a 5K run/walk, a Kids Superhero Dash for Dad—where kids ages 9 and younger participate in a short dash in superhero costumes—and a Snooze for Dudes virtual program where registrants can purchase a T-shirt to sleep in if they do not want to participate in the race.

The event will fund all types of services and programs connected to prostate cancer.

“Proceeds fund local community and national efforts to save lives by funding research, testing at-risk men, and providing educational resources for men and families,” said event spokeswoman Amanda Pini.

According to statistics provided by event officials, an American man dies from prostate cancer every 19 minutes, and one in seven American men will have prostate cancer during their lifetime.

Currently, there are nearly 2.8 million American men living with the disease.

For Los Angeles resident Juan Batres, the cause hits home. His father died in May 2014 from prostate cancer at age 66, after being diagnosed with the disease in 2012. A month after his death, Batres got involved with ZERO at the recommendation of a friend.

“I proudly wear my ZERO wristband as a reminder of what—and who—we’re fighting for, and this year my goal is to continue to educate, encourage and raise funds for further research that will hopefully lead to an end to this disease,” Batres said in a statement.

The event will be held June 27 at Shoreline Aquatic Park, behind the Aquarium of the Pacific, at 100 Aquarium Way.

The 5K Run/Walk begins at 8:30AM; the Kids Superhero Dash for Dad and post-race celebration begin at 9:30AM; a 5K awards ceremony will begin at 9:45AM.
