On Tuesday, April 14, from 10:00AM to 11:00AM the circular driveway of Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach will be transformed into a tricycle racetrack to kick off the 2015 Tour of Long Beach, happening on Saturday, May 9. The first of a series of kick-off events, three heats of spirited trike racing will include local community members and Miller Children’s employees battling for a chance to race against Miller Children’s patients.
As part of the event, staff will be on-hand to help people sign up for the Tour of Long Beach of which the proceeds will benefit the cancer research program at the Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center at Miller Children’s. Amateur cyclists and bicycle enthusiasts of every caliber are welcome to ride the 30-mile Tour of Long Beach, 62-mile Metric Century, the 100-mile “Cruz Gran Fondo” or a 5-mile Family Fun Ride.
Mayor Robert Garcia will be calling the winners of each race, who will vie for the chance to move on to heat three, to take on “the tykes on trikes” for the “Trike Champ” title. Divya Joshi, M.D. MMM, chief medical officer, Miller Children’s will also be racing. Free pastries and t-shirts will be available while supplies last, as enthusiastic participants make every pedal count.
Miller Children’s is located at 2801 Atlantic Ave. The event will be outside the main entrance (located at Memorial Medical Center Dr. and Atlantic Ave.).
