Mark Schafer was today named the new CEO of MemorialCareMedical Foundation, a nonprofit physician organization that is part of the MemorialCare Health System.
The Foundation represents more than 2,000 physicians under its two divisions, MemorialCare Medical Group and the Independent Practice Association, and also oversees MemorialCare’s imaging facilities, ambulatory surgery centers and retail clinics. About half of the physicians who are a part of the Foundation work in Long Beach.
Schafer is currently the Foundation’s Chief Medical Officer, a position he has held since 2010 when his previous employer, Bristol Park Medical Group, joined the Foundation. He will replace Patrick Kapsner, who is retiring the first of next year after four decades of healthcare industry service.
“It is an honor to be selected to lead MemorialCare Medical Foundation,” Dr. Schafer said in a statement. “The Foundation, MemorialCare Medical Group and Greater Newport Physicians have a long and distinguished record of providing the highest quality, compassionate care available to our patients in Los Angeles and Orange counties. I am looking forward to expanding these efforts in partnership with our exceptional physicians, staff and all members of the MemorialCare team as we continue to transform healthcare services in Southern California.”
According to MemorialCare, Dr. Schafer serves on the Board of Directors of California Association of Physician Groups and co-chairs its Clinical Leadership Committee. He is also on Boards of MemorialCare Innovation Fund, Wave Imaging and Beach Surgical Holdings.
He earned his bachelor’s degree with distinction in Neurobiology from University of Michigan, his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School and completed his internal medicine residency at University of California, Irvine. He also practiced as an Internal Medicine physician in Orange County and was a founder and developer of the software programs for Ascender Software.
“Mark Schafer and Pat Kapsner are acknowledged national pioneers and innovators in leading physician organizations,” said Barry Arbuckle, MemorialCare Health System’s president & CEO. “These visionaries are on the leading edge of developing state-of-the-art, successful clinical programs that engage physicians throughout the Southland.”
