A heat wave is expected to take over Southern California for most of the week, with the National Weather Service forecasting temperatures peaking in the low 90s in Long Beach and reaching triple digits in other areas while increasing health risks and the risk of wildfires.

A heat advisory will be in effect from 10:00AM Tuesday to 10:00PM Friday in Long Beach and other Los Angeles County cities including downtown LA, Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Hollywood.

The NWS forecast a mix of sunny and partly cloudy skies throughout the week. In Long Beach, expect partly cloudy skies Tuesday through Labor Day weekend, except Friday which is forecast as sunny. Temperatures could range from 91 to 93 degrees Tuesday through Friday and drop down to 87 to 89 degrees during the three-day weekend.

The heat wave is attributed to a combination of strong high pressure and weak onshore flow that will continue to produce dangerously hot temperatures across the region through at least the end of the week and possibly into the Labor Day weekend, according to the NWS.

“Due to a stubborn marine layer presence there will be a sharp temperature gradient from the beaches inland with interior coastal areas of Los Angeles County expected to reach the mid 90s the rest of the week,” the NWS reported. “Therefore, a health advisory has been issued beginning Tuesday for the Los Angeles County coast. Elsewhere along the coast, including the beaches of Los Angeles County, high temperatures will mostly be in the upper 70s to mid 80s. Overnight lows will generally be in the mid 60s to mid 70s.”
