Police are saying today that a 52-year old male driver died on Sunday when he collided with a traffic pole, after being involved in a hit and run accident at the intersection of Carson and Atlantic. The driver fled the scene of the first accident and continued north on Atlantic, speeding through another intersection and running into the pole. He was transported to a local hospital but died from his injuries.
No word yet on whether there are more injuries from the first accident, which the driver fled. The accident occurred around 3:25pm on Sunday afternoon, very close to the LBPD North Division Station. Officers inside heard the collision and rushed to assist the man, calling the Fire Department to transport the victim. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but could not recover. A press release today indicates that the driver was traveling at a very high rate of speed.
UPDATE (12:00pm): Police have indicated that the driver who was killed first collided with a motorcycle in the Atlantic & Carson intersection. A 43-year old male was riding the motorcycle, and was rear-ended by the driver of the car. He then fled the scene, traveling north on Atlantic when he struck the traffic pole and was killed.
The motorcycle rider sustained minor injuries and was transported to a hospital.
