A homeless man was injured Wednesday morning when an officer with the Long Beach Police Department’s quality-of-life team drove over his hand near the San Gabriel Riverbed, police said.

The incident happened at around 10:05 a.m. while officers were helping the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works post notices about an upcoming cleanup near the San Gabriel Riverbed and the eastbound 22 Freeway, according to the LBPD.

Police say the officer was driving a department vehicle through an area with dense foliage and debris when the officer ran over the hand of the man who had been concealed within the debris.

Officers immediately provided medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported the man to a local hospital to treat the injury, police said.

An investigation into the matter is ongoing, police said.

The LBPD’s quality-of-life unit has been working with the city’s homeless residents since 2007, serving as a liaison to connect homeless individuals to non-government agency services, housing resources and more.
