As fires continue to rage across California, people can help in a number of ways—though officials caution donors to be aware of financial scams related to wildfire recovery support.

Donations should only be made to reputable first-responder relief programs and animal-aid organizations, such as:

Los Angeles County officials said in a statement the most useful donation is money.

“Organizations actively involved in response efforts, such as the American Red Cross, need flexibility to provide disaster victims food, clothing, bedding, and other items most in need,” the statement said. “Monetary donations can also be used for cleaning materials, transportation help, and medical supplies.”

The Humane Society of Ventura County is also looking for donations to help displaced animals.

Airbnb, a home sharing website, has also activated an emergency service for fire victims. If you have a home or room available, the company is asking you to help victims and relief workers by providing shelter at no cost.
