10:25am | Beginning Friday night, October 28, and continuing until 6:00am Saturday, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will conduct a full freeway closure on the Long Beach Freeway (I-710) to replace aging pavement from Firestone Boulevard to Slauson Avenue. A second full closure will begin Sunday, October 30 at 11:00pm and continue overnight until 5:00am on Monday morning, October 31.  The full closure schedule is:

Friday, October 28 and Sunday, October 30
FULL FREEWAY CLOSURES will occur twice during the weekend and in both directions:

  • Friday at 11:59pm until Saturday at 6:00am.
  • Sunday at 11:00pm until Monday at 5:00am.

CLOSED ramps throughout the weekend:

  • On-ramps to northbound I-710:  from Imperial Highway, Firestone Blvd. and Florence Avenue.
  • On-ramps to southbound I-710:  from Atlantic Blvd., Florence Ave. & Firestone Boulevard.
  • Off-ramps from northbound I-710:  to Florence Avenue and Firestone Boulevard.

CLOSED connectors throughout the weekend:

  • Eastbound & westbound I-105 connector to northbound I-710.

Following Friday’s overnight closure, five lanes will open for all motorists on southbound I-710 from 6:00am Saturday until approximately 11:00pm Sunday, when the second full closure begins. All traffic will be directed onto southbound I-710 while construction continues throughout the weekend on northbound 710.  A 45 mph speed limit will be enforced within the construction zone.  Due to narrow lane widths, oversized loads are not permitted. Please plan ahead and use alternate routes and detours.

This weekend’s full freeway closure is the tenth in a series of planned closures that have taken place since August 5 as part of the $65 million project to remove aging pavement and replace it with a long life pavement strategy.  Caltrans estimates that one or possibly two more weekend closures may be scheduled to complete this phase of work that makes up nearly 80% of the entire project.  The schedule is weather-permitting and is subject to change pending rain or temperatures below 50 degrees.

The new pavement will provide the roadway with several decades of service life, improved pavement performance and a smoother ride for the traveling public. The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and its estimated completion date is spring 2012. The contractor is SEMA Construction of Lake Forest, CA.
