3:30pm | As project-related freeway closures will not occur during the Labor Day holiday weekend, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will resume Full Freeway Closures on the Long Beach Freeway (I-710) during the September 9 – 12 weekend.

Intermittent lane and ramp closures on I-710 may occur at the following times and locations:
Nightly, Wednesday, September 7 and Thursday, September 8 7:00 pm to 5:00 am.        

  • Up to 2 lanes in each direction between Firestone to south of Atlantic Blvd.
  • Intermittent on-and off-ramp closures at Firestone Boulevard and Florence Avenue.  

Both ramps will not be closed at the same time.  

Four Extended Weekend Closures have completed since the series began on August 5.  Following next week’s closures, and additional 5 full freeway closures are scheduled for  September 16-19; 23-26; 30-Oct. 3; Oct. 7-10; and Oct. 14-17. 

The Extended Weekend Closure schedule is as follows:

Friday, September 9 through Monday, September 12
FULL FREEWAY CLOSURES will occur twice during the weekend and in both directions:

  • Friday at 11:59 p.m. until Saturday at 6 a.m.
  • Sunday at 11 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m.

CLOSED RAMPS:

  • On-ramps to northbound I-710:  from Imperial Highway, Firestone Blvd. and Florence Avenue.
  • On-ramps to southbound I-710:  from Atlantic Blvd., Florence Ave. & Firestone Boulevard.
  • Off-ramps from southbound I-710:  at Florence Avenue and Firestone Boulevard.

CLOSED CONNECTORS:  Eastbound & westbound I-105 connector to northbound I-710.

The work is part of a $65 million Long Life Pavement Rehabilitation Project from Firestone Boulevard to Slauson Avenue to rehabilitate aging pavement and provide the roadway with several decades of service life, improved pavement performance and a smoother ride for the traveling public. The project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The contractor is SEMA Construction of Lake Forrest, Ca. The entire project is estimated to complete by spring 2012.
