Mayor Bob Foster announced yesterday that he has appointed Raúl A. Añorve and Lillian Kawasaki to the Mitigation Grant Advisory Committee.

The committee helps designate where grants given by the Port of Long Beach, will go and how they are to be implemented in order to improve the health of the community, particularly seniors and children. The grants are given to organizations who focus on lessening the impact of Port-releated air pollution as well as diminishing greenhouse gases.

“I am honored and excited to serve our port and city in this capacity, and I look forward to working with my fellow commitee members on improving health issues among vulvernable communities in Long Beach,” Añorve told the Post. “I also want to thank Mayor Foster for his trust in me.”

Añorve is an active volunteer in Long Beach, currently serving on the Human Relations Commission and on the board of directors for The Center Long Beach.

On speaking of what led to the appointment, Añorve said, “I was invited last week by the LB Mayor’s office to serve on this committee. subsequently, I reviewed the role and responsiblities as a committee member and felt that I had no choice but to serve on this valuable committee. I believe Long Beach is essential in protecting our environment and improving public health for all.”

Kawasaki, an eight-year Long Beach resident, has an extensive background in sustainability through her 12 years with the Port of Los Angeles, including her own consulting company specializing in environment, energy, and green economic issues.
