Long Beach will be taking part in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup this weekend, part of the West Coast’s larger efforts to clean the ocean, which counts the highest amount of participants in the event in the world.
According to a release issued by LBS Financial, the company and a cadre of volunteers will be cleaning up the coastline from 9:00AM to noon tomorrow at Junipero and Ocean Boulevard. Elected officials such as Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal are expected to be in attendance as well.
“LBS Financial is excited to join the Ocean Conservancy’s worldwide movement and help improve Long Beach’s beautiful coast,” said LBS Financial President Jeffrey Napper in a statement. “This is an opportunity for us to give back to our Members and work with them to protect our waters and environment. If we all do our part, Long Beach’s oceans can be more pristine and vital than ever before.”
The release stated that more than 560,000 volunteers in 91 countries took part in the International Coastal Cleanup last year, removing more than 16 million pounds of trash at bodies of water worldwide.
In California, 67,441 volunteers picked up 1.2 million pounds of ocean trash across the state’s 1,836.1 miles of shoreline.
This particular gathering, pushed for by LBS Financial, is its final event commemorating its 80th anniversary—an occasion it has been marking all summer with its Acts of Kindness series. Throughout the season, the company has been assisting homeless shelters and spearheading other volunteer and donation-based endeavors to give back to the members that have supported it since its founding, according to the release.
