5:00pm | Despite the 2-1 ruling by the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals stating that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional, marriage licenses will not be immediately granted. Marcia Ventura, spokesperson for the county’s Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s office, issued the following statement to the Long Beach Post:
“At this time the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is prohibited from issuing marriage licenses and/or performing civil marriage ceremonies for same-sex couples. The stay issued by the Court on August 16, 2010 is still in effect. The Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk is committed to providing all services in compliance with applicable laws.
“The Department will issue additional guidance regarding marriage license and civil marriage services for same-sex couples when more details become available.
“We are committed to serving Los Angeles County in a fair, accessible, and transparent manner.
