After roughly three days of vitriolic calls for her resignation following the release of a 2021 recorded conversation in which she made a series of racist remarks, Nury Martinez said today she was broken-hearted to resign her seat.

She issued a lengthy statement announcing her departure from the council, reflecting back on her work on the while representing the district, but avoiding any direct discussion of the recorded conversation. She earlier apologized for her remarks during the 2021 conversation.

“It is with a broken heart that I resign my seat for Council District 6, the community I grew up in and my home,” she said in the lengthy statement.

“I had the honor of serving in the role of a lifetime: being the representative for my neighbors.”

Martinez stepped down as council president on Monday, following the weekend release of the recorded conversation in which she made racist comments aimed at Councilman Mike Bonin’s 2-year-old Black adopted son and at other ethnic groups while the group discussed the politically sensitive process of redrawing council district boundaries.

The recorded conversation was leaked, appearing on Reddit before being removed from the site. It was unclear who was responsible for the recording and its leak.

The meeting apparently occurred at a Federation of Labor office, and the federation is investigating its source.

Martinez issued a statement Monday announcing her decision to surrender the council presidency, and apologizing to Bonin, his husband Sean Arian and their son.

With Martinez stepping down from her leadership role, Mitch O’Farrell, the council president pro tempore, was elevated to interim council president. He has since repeatedly called on Martinez, Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo—all of whom took part in the recorded conversation—to resign.

A group of elected officials including Harris-Dawson and Assemblymembers Isaac Bryan and Tina McKinnor also held a news conference Monday morning calling on Martinez, de León and Cedillo to immediately resign their council seats.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday, “The president is glad to see one of the participants in that conversation has resigned, but they all should. He believes that they all should resign.”

De León and Cedillo have not yet resigned their seats.

A fourth person in the recording, Ron Herrera, president of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, resigned his post on Monday.
