The Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club will be celebrating marriage equality at the Club’s 27th Anniversary Human Rights Awards Banquet.

Keynote speaker and recipient of the Michael Lonergan Memorial Award will be the Honorable Gavin Newsom, Mayor of San Francisco . Mayor Newsom’s courageous action in 2004, when he ordered city hall clerks to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples, was a crucial step leading up to the freedom and equality Californians enjoy today.

Lambda will also honor Shannon Price Minter, the attorney who argued the case before the State Supreme Court which culminated in the May 2008 decision. Minter is the Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) in San Francisco and a member of the Board of Directors of Equality California, the state-wide advocacy group.

Local Honorees include: Frank Rubio of Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, Inc.; Little Red Pictures, a Long Beach-based production company; Lambda Past President Marsha Naify, and attorney Reba Birmingham. This year,Todd Turley of Main Street Realty will be honored as “Man of the Year” and journalist Denise Penn has been named “Woman of the Year.”

The Banquet will be held in the Queen’s Salon aboard the Queen Mary on Sunday, October 5th, 2008, with a reception at 5pm followed by dinner at 6pm. For information: [email protected]
