Assemblymember Laura Richardson received 37.76% of the vote last night, which will catapult her into a run-off race for the 37th Congressional race on August 21st.  She bested all other candidates including State Senator Jenny Oropeza (31.31%) and Valerie McDonald (9.39%). Democrat Richardson will face Republican John Kanaley (7.64%), Green Candidate Daniel Brezenoff (1.21%) and Libertarian Herb Peters (1.08%).

Richardson had the support of the major labor unions including the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.  She also had the backing of Congresswoman Maxine Waters and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez.  Most of the Long Beach political establishment, including the Press-Telegram had endorsed Oropeza.
