Fifteen of Long Beach’s brightest and luckiest students were rewarded for their hard work last week, at the Long Beach Bar Association’s 50th Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner on May 15.
More than $35,000 in scholarships were given to the high school seniors, with the event’s highest honor going to Cynthia Leon of Millikan High School, who was awarded a $10,000 scholarship to put towards her continued education at the University of California, Berkeley in the fall. Leon will graduate from Millikan with a perfect 4.6 grade-point average and plans to major in Psychology.
First runners-up were Renaissance High’s Marissa Ford, Poly High’s Julie X. Blanc and Maxwell-Kushner-Lenhoff, and Wilson’s Tobi Skotnes. All students honored carried at least a 4.0 GPA and were active in many organizations.
Long Beach Police Chief Anthony Batts was on hand to deliver the keynote speech, and awards were presented by Superior Court Judge Charles Clay and Assistant District Attorney Laura Laesecke.
