The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) will conduct a DUI/Drivers License Checkpoint this Saturday in an unspecified location, the department announced today.

The LBPD Traffic Section announced today that the checkpoint will be scheduled between the hours of 7:00PM and 3:00AM in a location chosen based on collision statistics and frequency of DUI arrests.

“The deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes,” the release stated. “Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely.”

Statewide, driving under the influence has led to 867 deaths and over 23,000 serious injuries in 2013, while over the past three years, officers have investigated 1,032 DUI collisions, seven deaths and 370 injuries related to the crime, according to the release.

The LBPD also encouraged the use of the California Office of Traffic Safety Designated Driver VIP (DDVIP) mobile app as a preventative measure to drunk driving. Users can find establishments that offer incentives for designated drivers and also find Uber, Lyft or Curb rides through the interface.
