5:23pm | Port patrol officers with the Long Beach POlice Department rescued two men whose boat capsized Thursday, officials said.
The boat overturned at about 9:40 a.m. June 9, said department spokeswoman Lisa Massacani.
Port Unit officers located the men and their capsized vessel in a matter of minutes. One of the men swam to shore, while the other was found clinging to the boat. The man still in the water was pulled aboard the police boat and underwent a preliminary medical assessment.
A boat from the Long Beach Fire Department arrived at the scene a short time later. LBFD paramedics examined both men and determined they were both safe and had not suffered any injuries.
Massacani said the officers flipped the boat back over and pumped the water out of it in order to tow it back to shore.
LBPD’s Port Unit was established in the months following Sept 11, 2001. It responds to emergencies on the water, provides law enforcement to all Long Beach waterways, conducts cruise line and ship escorts, assists recreational vessels and oversees deployment of the LBPD Dive Team.
