In anticipation of Super Bowl celebrations (or disappointments), the Long Beach Police Department is urging residents to choose one or the other: drinking or driving.
The LBPD has come together with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) and the California Highway Patrol to support the “Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk” campaign.
The campaign encourages people to make plans ahead of time that will prevent them from drinking and driving, whether that means setting a designated driver, not drinking or other options.
“Everyone should be mindful that if you’re taking medication, whether prescription or over-the-counter, drinking even small amounts of alcohol can greatly intensify the impairment effects,” the LBPD said in a statement. “Driving impaired could result in injury or death for you or others on the road.”
The OTS is offering a free mobile app called DDVIP that is aimed at thanking sober designated driver football fans with free offers at area bars and restaurants. It is available for iPhone and Android.
“Drunk driving is completely preventable,” said Long Beach Police Lieutenant Kris Klein in a statement. “All it takes is a little planning. We want fans to remember that it’s a choice. Drink or drive; but never do both.”
