The Long Beach School District received $250,000 in prize money this morning after being recognized as a finalist for the Broad Prize for Urban Education, awarded to the school districts that provide the best quality education and make the biggest improvements from year to year. The ceremony was held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, NY.
The Brownsville Independent School District (TX) won the Grand Prize and $1 million in college scholarships.
LBUSD is one of just two districts in America to have been nominated for the award every year that it was eligible. The award began in 2002, and Long Beach Unified won in 2003 and has been named a finalist on three other occasions. A district is not eligible to be named a finalist the year after winning the overall award.
