After leading the pack of Long Beach Unified School District (LBSUD) schools last month with a string of honors, the California Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS) was recognized by Newsweek as having California’s highest SAT scores.

On average, CAMS students scored 2,168 out of 2,400 on their SATs, putting them at #618 out of 2,000 nationally ranked schools.

With a student population that is vastly diverse–12.4% of students identify as white, while the rest span African-American, Asian, Latino, Native American, Pacific Islander or mixed-race identities–as well as largely less affluent–48% of students qualify for free or reduced price meals–the scores exemplify the ability to educated, with quality, students of color as well as those on the economic margin.

In addition to CAMS, five other LBUSD schools ranked among the nation’s best public high schools including Renaissance High School for the Arts, Polytechnic High School, Lakewood High School, Wilson Classical High School, and Millikan High School. The rankings show which public high schools have been most efficient in turning out college-ready graduates.

“With about 22,000 public high schools in the United States, the schools that appear on the latest rankings have surpassed at least 91 percent of high schools nationwide,” said a District press release.

Last month, seven LBUSD schools made the Washington Post’s list of America’s top high schools while four schools earned a place on similar rankings by U.S. News and World Report.
