The Center Long Beach will be hosting an array of events to celebrate World AIDS Day tomorrow, December 1.

The first event of the day will be the opening of the Red Ribbon Art Display, a collection of art from HIV-positive artists as well as various artists’ perspectives on the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Three artists—Eddie Jelinet, Yolanda Rios, and Ray Lowen—will be on hand at the opening to discuss their various pieces as well as answer questions.

Following the art reception, a guest panel discussion regarding the workings of HIV in the contemporary world will be held with two panelists and a medical provider, moderated and hosted by The Center’s own Ismael Morales.

The highlight of the evening will the candlelight vigil, where all those participating will walk from The Center to the bluffs along Ocean Boulevard, followed by a welcoming speech regarding the purpose of World AIDS Day by Ismael. Guest will also be welcomed to come up to the podium and call the names of someone they have lost or care for due to HIV/AIDS.

To cap off the evening, two speakers—Councilmember Suja Lowenthan and Dr. Marcia Alcouloumre, MD—will hold quick presentations on Long Beach resources and the work of St. Mary’s Hospital. Lastly, the Long Beach AIDS Ride will be introduced and unveiled, with bicycle demonstrations from The Center’s Board Chair Ron Sylvester and the C.A.R.E. Program Director of Client Services Robert Stohr.

The Center is located at 2017 E. 4th Street.
