The 36th annual Long Beach Pride Parade began with some light rain, Sunday morning, but that did nothing to dampen the spirits of participants and spectators who were proud to wave the rainbow flag.
Among the many parade entrants were more than 100 volunteers who carried a 112-foot-long quilted rainbow flag—the biggest ever to grace Long Beach Pride—as part of a collaboration between Argentinian textile artists, the Museum of Latin American Art and the Long Beach AIDS Food Store.
This year, the parade and festival commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, the event generally credited with creating the modern gay rights movement. The parade wrapped up two days of festivities organized by the Long Beach Lesbian and GayPride nonprofit.
