Sister Loose stole the show when the Varsity Gay League took on the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in a charity kickball game on Sunday afternoon.
In the first inning, Sister Loose pranced around the bases in the opposite direction to score the first nun run.
And in the last inning, Sister Loose stole two bases—literally. She grabbed second and third and hid them somewhere in Pan American Park.
“I guess at that point we were baseless,” said Sister KumonaWanna Leiya. “But then, that’s me every day.”
The two squads joined forces to raise money for the AIDS Food Store in Long Beach. Ben Cary and Erik Legler started the Kicks & Giggles project through the Varsity Gay League.
The store was founded in 1985 with a mission of providing food and other essentials for people living with HIV/AIDS whose income is less than $1,500 a month.
The order of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence dates back to 1979 in San Francisco and has grown into a national organization.
The path to becoming an SPI is not an easy one. It mirrors the route to becoming a genuine Catholic nun. It can take up to two years to earn the cornette head covering. The candidate applies as an Aspirant and is asked to make a lifelong commitment. After several months of meetings, she can be promoted to Postulant. She is now allowed to wear a small amount of makeup and a modest head covering. If she merits advancement she becomes a Novice. She can now wear full makeup and a veil. Next, if she passes a three-fourths vote, she becomes a full-fledged nun and can don the cornette, which the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence lovingly call their “Hoobie Doobie.”
On Sunday, the sport of kickball became even more outlandish with the antics of Sisters Corky Screw, Burna Cross, Sheida Ho and June Cleavage making up rules as the game progressed.
The victor of the contest will always be in doubt but the winner of the day was the AIDS Food Store. More than $3,000 has been raised through Sunday.
Sister Caryn Soul was asked her opinion of the day’s event, declaring it a complete success: “It was a Hoobie Doobie, Oopsie Doopsie, Betsy Boopsie.”
Amen.
