For the fourth year in a row, Sister Spit, the nationally-touring spoken word showcase, will stop in Long Beach to grace our community with performances by “some of the most notorious, talented and just frickin’ interesting women and dykes.” The LGBTQ Center of Long Beach is proud to present this free event to the community on Friday, April 3 at 7:00PM at MADE in Long Beach.
“We are thrilled to be hosting Sister Spit again,” says Porter Gilberg, Executive Director for The Center, in a statement. “There is truly no other LGBTQ literary focused event like Sister Spit in Long Beach. These award-winning writers create a vibrant and enriching experience in our community every time they visit.”
Founded by author Michelle Tea and Sini Anderson, Sister Spit showcases queer and queer-inspired writers, artists and poets. As the Artistic Director for RADAR Productions, which produces Sister Spit and several other professional development and touring programs that inspire the production of queer and underground literature, Tea seeks to give voice to queer and outsider writers and artists whose work reflects the LGBTQ community’s diverse experiences.
“It is absolutely vital for the LGBTQ community to have access to free cultural programming which speaks to our unique lived experiences,” Gilberg noted in a statement. “This show affords our community the opportunity to hear from some of the best and brightest LGBTQ writers nationwide.”
Sister Spit 2015 will feature two local authors, Myriam Gurba and Griselda Suarez. Suarez, a professor at California State University Long Beach, is currently the editor for the Culture and Arts section on xQsi Magazine and has been published in numerous anthologies including the Acentos Literary Review and Sinister Wisdom Journal. Gurba, author of Dahlia Season, Wish You Were Me and several chapbooks, was the winner of the 2014 RADAR Productions’ Eli Coppola Memorial Chapbook Contest.
Rumpus contributor Thomas Page McBee, performance artist Mica Sigourney, fiction author of over 70 published pieces Tom Cho, Oakland School for the Arts Literary Chair Kate Schatz, visual artist Miriam Klein Stahl and editor of Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love and Fashion Virgie Tovar will also be performing.
Sister Spit will take place Friday, April 3, 2015 at 7:00 PM at MADE in Long Beach at 236 Pine Ave. Admission is free. Refreshments will be available for purchase and all attendees over 21 will receive free entry into Hamburger Mary’s, located at 330 Pine Ave., after the show.
