Yesterday’s announcement by President Barack Obama on ABC News that he has “evolved” and now openly supports gay marriage was, at least in the eyes of many supporters of and activists in gay rights, a major step forward in what has become a divided subject in our country. Obama becomes the first in-office President to proclaim support of gay marriage, directly following the overwhelming support — over 60% — to ban gay marriage and civil unions in North Carolina (the 31st in the union).

What is your reaction to Obama’s news? Is the view of gay marriage an inherently personal or political view? Or in this case, a mix of both?

Some local leaders have reacted to the news:

Mayor Bob Foster:
“President Obama took a tough stand today and did the right thing by openly supporting marriage equality. Way to go, Mr. President.”

Councilmember Robert Garcia:
“Today is a great day for America, and a great day for Long Beach. Our city has been on the front lines of equality and civil rights, and I am so proud of our community leaders and activists who have fought so hard for marriage equality. History will judge President Obama well.”

Cory Allen, Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club:
“Today, our nation made an historic leap forward with President Barack Obama’s declaration of support for Marriage Equality. In the wake of the passage of Amendment 1 in North Carolina, his support proves that equality for all Americans is not only on the horizon but will be a key issue going into the November elections. Long Beach Lambda Democratic Club thanks President Obama for keeping his promises to our community. I call upon all members of the LGBT community and our allies to unite behind the campaign to re-elect President Obama.”
