The local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is investigating a recent incident at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) where a student allegedly brandished a small knife during a class, officials announced Wednesday.

The organization will make a public statement after it studies the information currently being gathered surrounding the February 25th incident, Long Beach Branch NAACP President Naomi Rainey stated.

The reported incident happened on Thursday, February 25 during a sociology class, according to university officials. The professor allegedly perceived a threat when a male student was seen holding a small knife measuring 2.5 inches and asked the student to leave, which he did.

The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is investigating the case, since the involved student is a relative of a university police department employee.

The campus community was not notified of the incident until last week, when students shared information on the incident via social media and questioned why officials did not send a timely warning notice.

CSULB Jane Close Conoley sent out a statement a day after university officials put out a release on the incident.
