Long Beach Airport announced today that it is now requiring all passengers, employees and visitors to wear facial coverings while on airport property.

Airport officials said the policy is in line with the city’s current “Safer at Home” order and guidance from public health experts.

“As the economy slowly reopens and the public begins to travel again, we want to ensure the safest possible experience for all passengers,” Mayor Robert Garcia said in a written statement.

Facial coverings, which should cover an individual’s nose and mouth, include bandanas, neck gaiters or cloth masks with ties or straps. These coverings are not a replacement for physical distancing and frequent hand washing, officials noted.

All five airlines at LGB now require facial coverings for customers and employees, airport officials noted, as do concessions and rental car companies. Transportation Security Administration officers at the airport are also required to wear masks.

Guests may be asked by officers to adjust or remove face coverings during the security screening process.

Airport officials also announced additional safety measures, including new disinfecting protocols and floor decals to create physical distancing.
