10:04am | With the recent announcement that internet giant Google is planning to test a new ultra-speed internet connection in thousands of homes across the country, Long Beach 1st District Councilmember Robert Garcia has proposed a motion for the city of Long Beach to apply to test the new system. The proposal is cosponsored by Councilmembers Val Lerch and Dee Andrews.

Google has said that somewhere between 50,000-500,000 homes will test the new system.

“This is an opportunity for Long Beach to provide faster Internet service to more residents, help close the digital divide, and raise our city’s profile” Garcia said in a press release today. “I am committed to making Long Beach a technology leader.”

Google has claimed that its internet connection would allow users to access up to 1 gigabyte per second, which is approximately more than 100 times faster than most home broadband connections.
