With heavy rain, Long Beach is experiencing flooding in some areas, and the Long Beach Fire Department is advising residents to take precautions.
Pulse Point, a mobile app used by the LBFD and other agencies to show reported incidents, is showing flooding in the following areas:
-
- 1845 Cherry Avenue (reported at 10:53AM)
- 2250 Bellflower Boulevard (reported at 10:31AM)
“The fire department received approximately two calls for service related to the weather and increased rainfall,” Jake Heflin, an LBFD spokesman, told the Long Beach Post at about 12:50PM, adding that the calls were regarding street flooding and garage flooding. “Fire department resources responded and took appropriate action.”
The Post will continue to post flooding updates throughout the day as we learn about impacted areas.
The City of Long Beach said in a statement that residents are advised to avoid swimming in any coastal waters for three days following the end of a rainstorm with significant rainfall. The city also released the following tips regarding heavy rainfall and flooding:
-
- Avoid areas that are subject to sudden flooding.
- Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road, or walk across a flowing stream of water where the water is near or above your knees.
- Slow down at intersections, especially those with non-working signal lights, and treat them as stop signs. Be cautious while driving, especially at night.
- Take appropriate steps to be prepared by securing personal property and vehicles in areas that are prone to flooding.
- Avoid unnecessary trips. If you must travel during the storm, dress in warm, loose layers of clothing. Advise others of your destination and estimated arrival time.
- Be aware of utility workers working in or near the road.
- Stay off sand berms and stay away from City vehicles and machinery operating along the coastline.
- Keep pets inside and ensure they have shelter from the storm.
- Place refuse and recycling carts on the parkway or driveway apron.
- Report street flooding or downed trees by calling 562.570.2700.
- Stay away from downed power lines and call 9-1-1 immediately if you see any downed power lines.
