6:30pm | Long Beach firefighters are on the hunt for a man who they say attempted to set an occupied apartment on fire and vandalized the occupants vehicle.

Firefighter Steve Yamamoto, a Long Beach Fire Department spokesman, said that at about 5 a.m. Friday morning, neighbors at an apartment complex at 1998 E. 52nd St. awoke to the sound of breaking glass.

An investigation revealed that an unknown male suspect attempted to break down the door of one of the units in the complex before breaking a bedroom window and attempting to throw an ignited container of gasoline inside the apartment before fleeing the scene, Yamamoto said.

The suspect failed to get the container inside, however, and firefighters who responded to the scene were able to quickly extinguish it outside.

A vehicle belonging to the residents who were targeted by the suspect was also found to have been damaged and vandalized, Yamamoto said.

The suspect is wanted for attempted murder and attempted arson of an inhabited structure. A description of the suspect was not available.

Anyone with information regarding the identity of the suspect or details about the incident is asked to call the LBFD Arson hotline at 562-570-2582.
