A celebration marking the 26th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Long Beach Main Library, city officials announced today. 

“The City of Long Beach is committed to ensuring that all residents can live their lives to the fullest,” Mayor Robert Garcia stated in a city release. “Social and physical barriers that prevent people from living the lives they want must be removed.”

The event, sponsored by the Citizens Advisory Commission on Disabilities, will be held from 12:30PM to 3:30PM on Tuesday, July 26, at the library’s auditorium.

Organizers have titled the event “Get Out and Live Long Beach.”

Agencies that work with disabled people will be on site, including Long Beach Public Library’s Information Center for People with Disabilities; VA Long Beach Healthcare System; Ability First; Rancho Los Amigos Rehabilitation Center; Ms. Wheelchair California Foundation; Long Beach Transit; Disabled Resources Center; and the Long Beach City Clerk’s Office.

According to the release, the ADA is a civil rights legislative act that bans discrimination based on mental and physical disabilities and guarantees “people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life.”
