A Long Beach police officer was in stable condition last Thursday after being accidentally shot when his gun discharged at the North Division sub-station.

According to Megan Zabel of the Long Beach Police Department, the weapon unintentionally discharged around 6:10PM and the officer sustained an injury and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

“The circumstances as to how the unintentional discharge occurred is currently under investigation,” Zabel said.

It is unclear where the officer was hit.

Accidental discharges, though uncommon, are counted in the department’s annual tally of officer-involved shootings. Since 2012, there have only been one per year.
