The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced Friday it will deploy DUI patrols on St. Patrick’s Day to combat impaired driving.

All day on March 17, DUI patrols will be on the lookout for tell-tale signs of impaired drivers behind the wheel.

“St. Patrick’s Day brings to mind shamrocks, leprechauns, pots of gold, and good luck,” police said in a statement. “But no amount of luck can save you from a drunk-driving crash. So whether you’re buzzed or drunk on St. Patrick’s Day, it doesn’t matter.”

Police are advising drivers to plan ahead and either don’t drink, assign a designated driver or take public transportation.

Funding for the patrol is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
