Campus organizers are calling it “The Showdown,” a term referring to this Saturday’s Homecoming ’08 basketball game with UC Santa Barbara. The match against the Gauchos will tip-off at 4:05 pm in the Walter Pyramid. The university’s website advises that seats are limited and reservations are a must.

Hosted by mascot Prospector Pete and the CSULB Alumni Association, The Showdown is preceded by a 12 noon to 3:30 pm Tailgate Party including food, entertainment, face-painting, push cart racing and other activities planned by campus and student organizations.

For those wishing to reunite with some old faces, stop by the Alumni Association tent, hang out with fellow 49ers and enjoy some barbecue and an Opportunity Drawing.

Children and adults alike will be impressed by the activities provided by organizations within the campus community. Deciding to raise money while having fun, two fraternities – Delta Chi and Phi Kappa Tau – have partnered to provide a Dunk Tank and children’s food during the event. “We love Homecoming, it’s a time when we can have fun, meet our neighbors and raise a little money in the process,” according to Derek Franklin, a senior Business Communications major serving his second year as Delta Chi’s President. Proceeds raised from their activities will benefit the V Foundation, an organization focusing on cancer research.

Accompanying the Dunk Tank is the “Roaring Thunder” Weiner Dog Stampede and other games for “cowpokes” of all ages. Homecoming ’08 will also include free campus tours, including those through the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Gardens, beginning at 12:30 and continuing every half hour.

See you at the Showdown!
