2:45pm | A four-member team of local students from Hudson Middle School in Long Beach took first place in a national competition held over the weekend in Denver, Colorado.

Breanna Nery, Rae-Jillian Rivera, Kimberly Ventura and Reginald Lata of Hudson’s Math, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) team won the national championship in the middle school competition of the National Engineering Design Competition at the University of Colorado.

Their task was to build a wind-energy device that could pull a model car in the shortest amount of time. The Hudson team won the State Championship in May and represented California during the competition in Colorado. There, they came out on top of teams from five other states to claim victory.

Now if the young engineers could start producing wind-powered vehicles for mass production, I’ll be first in line.
