A 17-year-old Long Beach teen died today after he was hit by an SUV Thursday night when he jaywalked in North Long Beach, authorities said.

At about 7:00PM, The unidentified victim and two other male juveniles attempted to run diagonally across Artesia Boulevard at Myrtle Avenue as the driver of a 2009 Ford Flex was traveling westbound on Artesia Boulevard, according to a release from the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD).

“Two of the male pedestrians successfully ran across Artesia Boulevard in front of the vehicle, but the victim did not and was struck by the Ford Flex,” officials stated.

The driver, identified as a 43-year-old Compton resident, stopped at the scene and called 911.

Arriving officers found the SUV at the intersection and the victim lying in the roadway next to the vehicle. Long Beach paramedics also responded to the scene and transported the victim, who suffered major head trauma, to a local hospital.

The driver, who had a valid driver’s license and insurance, was not cited.

Authorities said the teen died from his injuries at a local hospital on Friday, September 30.
