The city is offering several opportunities to get vaccinated ahead of this year’s flu season—and will use the clinics as a model for delivering a vaccine for COVID-19 when one becomes available, officials said.

County officials are already preparing for a potential vaccine for COVID-19 by developing a plan for delivery as soon as November, with possible large-scale availability of a vaccination in mid-2021, according to L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s office.

In the meantime, local health officials are urging the public to get their flu shots as the city braces for a possible jump in hospitalizations and testing demand as flu season collides with the coronavirus this fall.

“It’s more important than ever that everyone get their flu shots this season,” city Health Officer Dr. Anissa Davis said in late August.

Flu vaccinations will kick off with a large-scale event from 3 to 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at Veterans Stadium in East Long Beach, 5000 E. Lew Davis St.

The city will then offer a series of clinics through Nov. 21, or while supplies last:

  • From 3 to 6 p.m. every Thursday at Veterans Stadium.
  • from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday at Cabrillo High School, 2001 Santa Fe Ave.

The clinics will be focused on those without health insurance or those who may not be able to get vaccinated through their health provider.

The clinics will be drive-thru, however families with children under 12 will be directed to a walk-up area.

Residents can also schedule a flu shot at the Health Department by calling 562-570-4315.
