Information from the California Employment Development Department reveals that Long Beach’s unemployment rate now stands at 12.5%, higher than the rates in Los Angeles County (11.6%) and the state of California (11.5%). The new statistics mark a large increase in just six months since the Long Beach unemployment rate reached 9.6% in November of 2008.

More than 30,000 Long Beach residents in the work force are without jobs, by far the second-largest number of unemployed in the Los Angeles area except for L.A. itself (244,000).
