Authorities today identified two pedestrians killed by Metrolink trains—one in Sylmar and the other in Dana Point.

Felicia Smith, 24, of Long Beach was struck by Palmdale-bound Metrolink Train 285 at the Sylmar station in the 12200 block of Frank Modugno Drive about 6:00PM Monday.

Smith, who died at the scene, had been facing the tracks and at some point turned, slipped and fell backward from the platform, said Lt. Paul McLaughlin of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mission Station.

A man, who witnesses said was Smith’s boyfriend, jumped onto the tracks and tried to pull her to safety, but he was only able to move her a short distance before he had to jump out of the way of the oncoming train, McLaughlin said.

About 4:00PM Monday in Dana Point, Ernest Gibson, 71, of Lake Elsinore was struck and killed by a Metrolink train and another person was injured in an area that Metrolink officials said was closed to pedestrians.

The crash involved Metrolink’s OC train 609, which was traveling from Oceanside to Los Angeles.
