9:01pm | Individuals interested in pursuing a career in the infrastructure construction industry can receive free construction skills training courtesy of the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network starting next month.

The 11-week training program beginning in August will provide participants with hands-on experience in the construction filed, according to Pacific Gateway. and once the training is completed, successful participants will receive job placement assistance. 

Through the training, certifications can be obtained for Hazardous Waste Worker Protection and Emergency Response; OSHA 30, including Traffic Control and Confined Space; and CPR/First Aid. In addition, participants will enhance their industry skills, knowledge and certifications and participate in life-skills, resume-writing and interview-techniques workshops.

A California driver’s license, reliable transportation and prior construction trade experience are among desirable qualifications in the construction field, according to Pacific Gateway.

There is limited space for the no-cost, hands-on Construction Skills Training Program, and all those interested in signing up should call 562-570-WORK or stop by any of Pacific Gateway’s One-Stop Career Centers. Registration in the Pacific Gateway Workforce Investment Network is required prior to enrollment in the training program. Registration is free and can be completed by bringing a state-issued I.D. or driver’s license and a Social Security Card to one of the One-Stop Career Centers.

In lieu of a state I.D. or driver’s license, participants can bring a:

  • School I.D. card (with birth date) and a Social Security Card, or
  • School ID.. card (without birth date), a Social Security Card and a birth certificate, or
  • U.S. Passport and any proof of Social Security Number (Social Security card, school printout).

If applicable, also bring an unexpired Permanent Resident Card 9Green Card). FOr males born after Jan. 1, 1960, proof of registration with the Selective Service System is required. Additional information about the SSS can be obtained by calling 847-688-3117 or visiting SSS.gov.

The Construction Skills Training Program is made possible through the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration, CalTrans and the Workforce Investment Act.
