Dr. Suja Lowenthal will join the geological sciences faculty at California State University at Long Beach (CSULB) in Spring 2008.  For the past two years, Lowenthal served as the Chief of Strategic Planning and Initiatives for the Water Replenishment District of Southern California.

“Based on Lowenthal’s expertise in water pricing and her experience with state and regional water agencies, she can offer our students a valuable course on water policy issues,” said Dr. Stan Finney, Chair, Department of Geological Science at CSULB.

With her thesis on Urban Water Pricing, Lowenthal is focusing her upper-division class on the California water supply, water-pricing and water management practices with a look abroad for strategies that can lend greater opportunities to secure California’s water supply and quality reliability.

“I have accomplished a lot of my goals in reaching our youth with a message about water conservation,” Councilmember Lowenthal said. “Now it is time for me to take part in the molding of our next generation of water policy makers.”

A graduate of University of Southern California, Lowenthal earned a Doctorate in Policy, Planning and Development. She has extensive background in the water industry, a vantage that gives her teaching a unique context. Lowenthal first joined the Central Basin Municipal Water District in 1998 and then served as Government Affairs Manager at the West Basin Municipal Water District.
